If you’ve read David Sedaris, this might be a little less shocking, but for those who haven’t, oh brother, hold on tight.
Are you sitting down?
French animals DON’T MAKE THE SAME SOUNDS as American ones. But, I don’t understand, you say. Pigs always say ‘’oink, oink.”
Huh un. Not in France they don’t. In France they say “groin, groin.” But wait, there’s more. Chickens say “cui, cui,” sheep say “beee, beee” and cows saw “meuh.”
Ready for the kicker? Ask me what a rooster says, just ask me.
COCORICCO.
I know, I can’t handle it either.
There’s a movie out right now called La Ferme Rebelle, and every time I see the posters, (with animal noises printed right above their little animated heads) I am reminded of how back in the day, my sisters and I would sit around the kids’ table and ask our French cousins, So, a dog says WHAT in French? and then wrap our pint sized arms around our kiddie-bellies and shake, shake, shake.
Then our cousins would meekly ask us what a dog says in English and my sisters and I would say, with exasperation--obviously, a dog says "woof woof", and shake our heads because they were so sad and had to grow up in dumb FRANCE where the animals didn’t even say the right things.
Oh, the past summer was fun...co co ri co.

Don't forget my personal favorite, "coin coin!" for the duck.

reading through the archives, and i figured i'd set the record straight: chickens don't actually go "cui cui", birds do, but chicken go "cot cot" or even "cot cot codec" sometimes.
just dropping mad french science here.
nice "blogue" btw. it's nice to read about your country through the fresh eyes of someone who has not grown up here.
