Excuse me while I have an American girl moment, but OH. MY. GOD.
Great moments include, but are not limited to:
1. David shops at the hardware store. “Hello, I am looking for a stick, that make the water hooot hot, today.”
2. David buys butter with Ira, and confides that Hugh yelled at him for buying generic Grand Jury butter last time.
[Confidential to David Sedaris: as a fellow thrifty shopper, can I recommend Leader Price Muelsi Croustillant Aux 3 Chocolats? Nothing will impress your guests like those unexpected raisins!]
3. David and Ira see Judge Judy at the Puces de Clingnancourt. David loves Judge Judy, thinks she should run for mayor of New York, so when he sees her he goes “Oh. my. God.” in the most genuine, 15-year-old girl way possible. Making me feel that of all the soul bearing he has done up to this moment, this is possibly the most raw connection with him I have ever felt.
You can listen for free on the This American Life site. Or get an Audible subscription like I have and make people on the street think you’re crazy when you laugh and cry in public. (It’s the music! The music is sneaky and Hitchcockian in its power to make you lose yourself in the story.)
